4th Sunbury Guides  

Guiding started almost 100 years ago and now has a membership of around ten million in 140 countries. The girls all make a promise to love their God, serve their country and to try to follow high moral standards. There are many opportunities to meet other members of the Movement.

Following a recent updating of the Guide Programme, the girls are encouraged to plan and execute their own activities based in the areas of Healthy Lifestyle, Global Awareness, Discovery, Skills and Relationships, and Diversity.

4th Sunbury Guides is one of three Guide Units within Sunbury; we compete with them in swimming, athletics and handicrafts on a friendly basis. The unit meets at the Methodist Church on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 to 9.00pm, in term-time, under the supervision of three adult leaders. At present we have about 20 girls aged 10 to 15. Most girls move up from different Brownie Packs but some join directly as Guides. They wear a uniform top in blue or navy but can choose from a selection of different styles.

The Guides work in small groups (patrols) on activities selected from the Guide Programme; they may also obtain achievement badges individually in areas of personal interest.

Residential events are part of the programme; we try to camp under canvas at least once a year and organise sleep-overs and indoor holidays. Enjoyment of the outdoors is a major feature, particularly in the summer.

The unit attends Parade service and special events at the Methodist Church several times a year. We are involved in other local community activities, including litter picking and bulb planting. We assisted with the Sunbury Millennium Embroidery project and were privileged to serve refreshments to Her Majesty the Queen in June 2001.
